Gutters have one job. Full ones do the opposite of it.
The reason gutters exist is to move roof water away from your foundation. When they fill with leaves, seeds, and shingle grit, the water overflows the edge and runs down the siding, behind the fascia, and straight into the ground beside your basement. In an Ottawa winter it gets worse: trapped water freezes, expands, and slowly pries the gutter off the house. Twice-a-year cleaning is the cheap version of that repair bill.
